Josephine Nabukenya, PhD (School of Computing & Information Technology, Makerere University, Uganda)

Dr. Josephine Nabukenya is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and previously served as the Dean of the School of Computing and Informatics Technology, Makerere University. She is the Founder and Chair of the Makerere University Health Informatics Research Group (MakHIRG – www.healthinformaticsresearch.mak.ac.ug). She spearheaded the development of Health Informatics (HI) graduate programmes for both M.Sc. HI and PhD HI with the support of NORAD / NORHED funding at Makerere University. She is a member of the Ministry of Health-Uganda eHealth Technical Working Group (currently known as Health Information, Innovations and Research Group), as well as Digital Health & Interoperability Working Group of Health Data Collaborative. She was part of the 10-member Core team that developed the Uganda National eHealth Policy & Strategy and currently supporting the Ministry of Health for its implementation. Some of the research projects she is leading include: i) Assessing the Potential for Transforming Health in Uganda through an Electronic Health Data Sharing Platform and Data Science; ii) Exploring the Feasibility for Strengthening Uganda’s Health System through Standardizing Digital Health: Architecture, Standards and Knowledge Products (eRegistries – Clients, Health workers and Health facilities) iii) Optimizing Data Use and Utilization for Uganda’s Health System through Interoperability and Governance; and vi) Beyond Monitoring Functionality to Impact Evaluation of eHealth Implementations in Uganda. Her research interests lie within the disciplines of Information Systems and Health Informatics. Dr. Nabukenya has published internationally and also reviewed for international journals and conferences in the same disciplines.
